  • O1.1 Develop biocompatible ionic liquids (ILs) from natural sources.
  • O1.2 Characterize the thermophysical properties of these ILs.
  • O1.3 Create Supported Ionic Liquid Membranes (SILMs) for enhanced separation efficiency.

Selective Extraction of Rare Earth Elements (REEs)

Lead Beneficiary: University of Ljubljana (UL)

  • O2.1 Define the REE coordination properties in ILs through structural and thermodynamic analysis.
  • O2.2 Identify the best IL composition for liquid-liquid extraction.
  • O2.3 Optimize the performance of SILMs for REE separations.

Water Treatment and Recycling Using Natural Adsorbents

Lead Beneficiary: Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB)

  • O3.1 Develop natural adsorbents (PYP/ZEO) with controlled properties.
  • O3.2 Characterize their adsorption efficiency for toxic metals (TMs).
  • O3.3 Optimize adsorbent regeneration methods to extend their usability.
  • O3.4 Repurpose treated adsorbents as catalysts for wastewater treatment.

Integrated Process of REE Extraction, Metal Removal, and Water Recycling

Lead Beneficiary: AERIS Tecnologías Ambientales (AERIS)

  • O4.1 Design a demonstrator module for REE and metal adsorption.
  • O4.2 Validate the REE separation process for industrial applications.
  • O4.3 Conduct an economic analysis and Life Cycle Assessment (LCA).
  • O4.4 Engage with stakeholders and policymakers to facilitate implementation.

Communication and Dissemination

Lead Beneficiary: Sustainable Innovation Technology Services (SITES)

  • O5.1 Maximize the visibility and impact of FREECOVER’s results.
  • O5.2 Provide training and knowledge exchange for early-stage researchers (ESRs).
  • O5.3 Engage public, investors, researchers, and SMEs through dedicated events and media.
