FREECOVER Newsletter No. 4 Now Available

Mid-term progress, new research results and EU–Cuba staff exchanges, June to October 2026

FREECOVER Newsletter No. 4 is now available. This issue covers June to October 2026, a period in which the project passed its halfway point and shared its research with new audiences in Europe and beyond. FREECOVER develops greener ways to recover rare earth elements from end-of-life permanent magnets.

Mid-Term Meeting in Udine
On 14–15 July 2026, the consortium met at the University of Udine for its Mid-Term Meeting. Partners reviewed progress in all six Work Packages and discussed the next steps for staff exchanges.

Science and training
At ISMEC 2026 in Udine (15–18 June), FREECOVER researchers gave a plenary lecture and an oral presentation on ionic liquids and natural zeolite for rare earth recovery. On 15 July, Master Class #3 introduced researchers to life cycle assessment, life cycle costing and social life cycle assessment.

EU–Cuba staff exchanges
The issue follows José Alejandro Ricardo García (UNIUD) on his secondment at the University of Havana. It also reports on the seminar of 3 September 2026, where four University of Havana researchers presented the results of their secondments in Serbia and Spain.

From Verona and Kyoto to Seville
The University of Verona presented the FREECOVER poster at European Researchers’ Night in Verona, while the team presented results at ICL 2026 in Kyoto, Japan. On 23 September 2026, Project Coordinator Prof. Andrea Melchior gave an invited seminar at the University of Seville on metal ions in ionic liquids.
